What is pre-diabetes or Insulin resistance?

Pre-diabetes or Insulin resistance is a metabolic condition characterized by an malfunction of glucose metabolism. These individuals may have blood sugar levels or hemoglobin A1C levels higher than normal but lower than the levels in diabetes. If you have pre-diabetes you are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

The food you eat gets converted into sugar which is transported via blood to muscles and organs for energy. High carbohydrate meals generate higher blood sugar levels, which stimulates the pancreas to release higher amount of insulin to control blood sugar levels.

In insulin resistance, much higher levels of Insulin (Hyperinsulinemia) are generated to control blood sugar. This elevated Insulin (hyperinsulinemia) leads to several detrimental metabolic effects such as increase in fat storage, increase in Triglycerides production by liver, increase in inflammation and other metabolic dysfunctions collectively elevating risk for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular events.

Some of the examples of hyperinsulinemia are disorders like Metabolic syndrome (syndrome X) and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) which is characterized by infertility, menstrual irregularity, skin problems and excessive facial and body hair.

What is the incidence of pre-diabetes in US?

35% adults ages 20 years or older had pre-diabetes

50% adults ages 65 years or older had prediabetes.

79 million Americans ages 20 years or older are estimated to have pre-diabetes in 2010 .
